Whether you want to call it magnetism, polarity, electricity, thought, intelligence or charisma, it's still attraction, and it invests rverything—animal, vegetable or mineral. We form synchronized partnerships naturally, and although they are hardly noticeable to some, they are quite tangible to others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have always relied on emotional contact and signals from our parents, peers, teachers and friends to guide us through our lives. We are influenced by their emotional feedback, their gestures and their way of doing things. When your mother or father sat a certain way, you would do the same; if a cool friend or a movie star walks a certain way, you might adopt a similar gait.&lt;br /&gt;We learn by aligning ourselves with the signals other people send us. They impress their way of being on us. We synchronize what we like about them. People with common interests have natural rapport.&lt;br /&gt;The reason you get along so well with your close friends is that you have similar interests, similar opinions and maybe even similar ways of doing things. Sure, you will often find plenty to differ on and argue about, but essentially you are very much like each other. We human beings are social animals. We live in communities. It's far more "normal" and even logical for people to get along with one another than it is for them to argue, fight and not get along. The irony is that society has conditioned us to be afraid of each other—to set up boundaries between ourselves and others. We live in a society that pretends to find its unity through love but in actuality finds it through fear. You feel a little uncomfortable—even suspicious—when you can't be understood. Then suddenly you meet someone from your own country, maybe your own state. This person speaks your language, and whammo, you have a new best friend—for your vacation&lt;br /&gt;at least. You might share experiences, opinions, insights, where to find the best restaurants and bargains. You will doubtless exchange personal information about family and work. All this and much more because you share a language.&lt;br /&gt;That's rapport by chance. Maybe your enthusiasm will lead you to continue that friendship after returning home, only to discover that apart from language and location the two of you have nothing in common and the relationship fizzles out all by itself. This isn't limited to language and geography. Chance encounters happen on almost a daily basis to all of us —at work, in the supermarket, at the Laundromat or the bus stop.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;     The key to establishing rapport with strangers is to learn how to become like them. Fortunately, this is both very simple and a lot of fun to do. As we already know, rapport can happen in response to a shared interest or when you find yourself in certain situations or circumstances. But when none of these conditions is present, there is a way to establish rapport "by design".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Mark is attending a formal dinner, eight to a table. He hates coming to these events and as usual&lt;br /&gt;is stuck for words. He's beginning to get that squirmy feeling. He doesn't know anyone except for his accountant, who's sitting at the other end of the banquet hall and making everyone laugh. Suddenly the guest across from him, a young woman in a shiny blue dress who caught his eye a few moments ago even though they hadn't spoken, tells the man on her left that she is an avid stamp collector.&lt;br /&gt;Gust like Mark!&lt;br /&gt;Mark is relieved and overjoyed because chance has given him an excuse to talk to her. They have something in common— stamps. Mark speaks up and tells Tanya all about his rare 1948 Poached Egg stamp and how he found it when his Pontiac broke down in Cortlandville in upper New York State...&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we set out to establish rapport by design, we purposely reduce the distance and differences between another person and ourselves by finding common ground. When this happens, we feel a natural connection with the person, or persons, because we are akin— we have become like each other.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As rapport develops between Mark and Tanya in the finger poised gently on her cheek, close to her ear, Tanya leans toward Mark; her pupils dilate slightly as her shoulders become softer and more relaxed. Mark too leans forward on his elbows, smiling as Tanya smiles, nodding as she nods. She sips her water; he finds himself doing the same . . .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Mark and Tanya have established rapport. They connected and initiated a relationship through a common interest. Their rapport is evident on many levels—the cues and rhythms they are taking from and sending to each other, the imperceptible modifications of behavior they are making without thinking. The shared interest has given them proximity, and they are adjusting to one another. Who knows where it will lead? They like each other because they are like each other, and the dance of rapport has begun to calibrate itself. They have made a favorable connection in first few seconds.&lt;/blockquote&gt;story box above, there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. The average person would perhaps not notice, but to the trained eye and ear there is plenty happening. As their shared interest in stamps emerges, so does a similarity in their behavior toward each other. Body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, eye contact, breathing patterns, body rhythms and many more physiological activities come into alignment. Simply put, they unconsciously start to behave in a like manner.&lt;br /&gt;They start synchronizing their actions. Rapport by design is established by deliberately altering your behavior, just for a short time, in order to become like the other person. You become an adapter, just long enough to establish a connection. Precisely what you can adapt and how to do it is what you are about to learn in the chapters that follow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All you will need at your disposal is your attitude, your appearance, your body, your facial expressions, your eyes, the tone and rhythms of your voice, your talent for structuring words into engaging conversation and your about-to-be-revealed gift for discovering another person's favorite sense. Add to this an ability to listen to and observe other people and a very large helping of curiosity. No gadgets, no appliances, no aphrodisiacs, no pills, no checkbook, no big stick. EVERY HABIT YOU HAVE NOW SERVED YOU WELL WHEN IT WAS ESTABLISHED!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's look at this example:&lt;br /&gt;Once upon a time, you wore braces on your teeth. Of course you wanted your teeth to be straight and your smile to look great for the rest of your life. But while you wore those braces, you were very self-conscious about how you looked. You got into a habit of covering your mouth with your hand every time you smiled or laughed.&lt;br /&gt;At first this worked very well. It made you feel less self-conscious by concealing the blemish of the braces from full view of the world. But you don't have those braces any more and this habit doesn't work so well.&lt;br /&gt;Now you are more interested in projecting a powerful image of a person who is confident. Covering your mouth when you smile or laugh does just the opposite; it tells those around you that you are less than happy with your appearance and behavior.&lt;br /&gt;You can see here though, that this habit served you when it was established. It gave you what you wanted at the time. Just because you think you don't want that same thing now is not enough of an action for the habit to disappear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;NOTICE:&lt;/span&gt; THOUGHT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR CHANGE, BUT IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE THE CHANGE. CHANGE ONLY OCCURS WHEN THOUGHT IS FOLLOWED BY ACTION.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Action is a must-do, but only if you are clear on what action to take. Without it, you are living life on autopilot. Sometimes that is okay. But more often than not, you are missing out on an opportunity to make conscious choices.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The majority of people I have worked with do not pay attention to most of their life. They may pay attention to one or two aspects of their life, but not to their entire life. They let habits run most of their days and only pay attention to their children or their jobs or their coveted desires.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But paying attention to your life is the only opportunity you have to understand what it is you are currently doing. It also helps you discern if the habits you have right now are helping or hindering your life.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Let's begin!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To begin the process of paying attention to your life just ask yourself regularly throughout the day, 'What am I doing now?' Focus on the actions you are taking, including the actions of thought. Don't worry yet about why you are taking these actions, just observe yourself.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Remember, observation is neutral. Observation has no judgment. Your inner phoenix is a master at observation. Your phoenix always knows what she is doing, even if what she is doing is nothing. I'm guessing, however, that if you truly pay attention you will find that you are rarely, if ever, doing nothing!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here's an example of doing nothing:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You come home from a hard day at the office. After changing out of your work clothes and greeting others who live with you, or checking your voice mail and e-mail, you plop down on the couch, grab the remote, and turn on the TV.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then the phone rings. It turns out to be your best friend and when she asks you what you are doing, you say, "Nothing."&lt;br /&gt;Excuse me while I chuckle, but you were far from doing nothing.&lt;br /&gt;Let me ask your phoenix here… what were you doing? Ahhhh... I see… Here is what your phoenix said.&lt;br /&gt;You were:&lt;br /&gt;- Watching TV&lt;br /&gt;- Trying to relax&lt;br /&gt;- Worrying about work tomorrow&lt;br /&gt;- Wondering if the plans you have for the weekend are the ones you want&lt;br /&gt;- Wondering what is for dinner&lt;br /&gt;- Realizing your feet hurt&lt;br /&gt;- Trying to remember if you saw this program before&lt;br /&gt;- Ignoring the chores you have to do&lt;br /&gt;- Listening to the neighbor's dog bark… again&lt;br /&gt;- …&lt;br /&gt;See what I mean? Were you really doing nothing? &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;NOTICE:&lt;/span&gt; BECOMING AWARE OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING, GIVES YOU THE POWER TO CHANGE WHAT YOU ARE DOING! &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is too overwhelming to perform this exercise all day long. You would get nothing else done! But try it at intervals. Perhaps once every hour, whatever interval doesn't seem overwhelming to start. Most people find this exercise fun and very, very enlightening!&lt;br /&gt;Once you learn how to pay attention to what you are currently doing, you can begin to figure out if what you are currently doing is what you really want to do. Your sub-conscious will simply create a habit out of anything you do on a regular basis.&lt;br /&gt;This is good news and bad news! The good news is that if you want to establish a habit, all you have to do it perform the action associated with the habit over and over until it becomes a pattern. The bad news is that if you perform an action over and over again it will become a habit!&lt;br /&gt;Simply performing an action over and over will create a subconscious pattern to do it more often. The more you perform the action, the more ingrained the habit will become.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;NOTICE:&lt;/span&gt; BAD HABITS ARE SIMPLY ACTIONS YOU HAVE PERFORMED TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT NO LONGER SERVE YOU.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, here is the rub! Once a habit is established, especially if that habit has been years in the making, it can take quite a lot of effort to abandon it. In fact, if all you are trying to do is abandon a long-standing habit, you may indeed fail. The sub-conscious mind only deals with things in the positive. If you concentrate on not doing a thing, the thing itself is all the sub-conscious mind will recognize and the habit will stay firmly entrenched in your life. What a sad fact!&lt;br /&gt;This is where your inner phoenix comes into the picture. Your phoenix knows how to take action. Your phoenix is a master of action. Habits are very important to living a good and effective life. Many people think of habits only as bad things they need to overcome. But habits are simply the unconscious things we do without having to apply conscious thought to do them.&lt;br /&gt;Here's an example:&lt;br /&gt;Remember when you first learned to drive a car? You sat down in the driver's seat and had no idea what to do first. Do you fasten your seatbelt? Do you put the key in the ignition? Do you adjust the mirrors? The list of things you could do first goes on and on. And the list gets much longer as soon as you put your foot on the gas pedal and begin to move the vehicle!&lt;br /&gt;If you had to think about everything on that list every time you got behind the wheel, you would never get out of your driveway, let alone go anywhere else! But by the time you got your driver's license, most of these things had become habits. I know when I sit down behind the wheel, I put the key in the ignition, fasten my seatbelt, check the mirrors, turn the ignition key, check the gas level, pop on the radio, adjust the environmental controls, and put the car in gear and I don't even think about what I'm doing until I am ready to pull out into traffic. I don't think about these things, they just all happen as a result of sitting down in the driver's seat. My sub-conscious mind has been programmed to do it all for me.&lt;br /&gt;This is a good example of a set of habits that serve life. They make life more efficient. Without good habits like this everything you do would be harder. And of course you really want things to be easier, not harder!&lt;br /&gt;Celebrate habits for their ability to help you. Be grateful for your sub-conscious mind and its ability to learn and deploy actions for you. Perhaps you have heard of any of the other phoenixes mentioned in the folklore of almost every ancient culture on earth. Even the wildly popular Harry Potter books written by J. K. Rowling feature a phoenix whose tears can heal the most severe maladies.&lt;br /&gt;The Phoenix that resides within you is none of these, but does share some of their characteristics. Among other things, your phoenix is a master of many essential life traits, such as perseverance, gratitude, forgiveness, thought, action, intention, and observation. If you spend the time to find and unleash your inner phoenix, you will have access to life tools that will help you transform your life for the better.&lt;br /&gt;So I challenge you. Right now, today, as you are reading this article, acknowledge your inner phoenix.
